Our Story

Since 1918.

Crossburn has served Douglas for more than fifty years — but the family story behind it begins over a century ago.

Crossburn has been serving Douglas and the surrounding area for more than 50 years, but the story of the business begins much earlier.

The Smith family's connection to local business stretches back over a century. In 1918, Smith Bros Haulage was established in Douglas, marking the beginning of a long association with enterprise, transport and service within the local community.

Following successful business ventures in Canada during the 1950s and early 1960s, John and Nett Smith returned to Scotland and settled locally with their young family. Having already acquired Townhead Garage in Douglas, John purchased Crossburn House in 1972. Included in the sale was a small filling station that would go on to become Crossburn Service Station.

What began as a small village filling station became a business that has served generations of local residents, businesses and visitors. Over the decades, Crossburn has continually adapted to meet changing needs while remaining independently owned and family operated.

Today, Crossburn is home to Crossburn Service Station and Crossburn Kitchen. While the business has changed considerably since 1972, its foundations remain the same — hard work, reliability, community and a commitment to providing a service people can depend on.

Crossburn remains a lasting reflection of the vision, determination and values of John and Nett Smith, whose dedication helped shape the business and family that continue it today.

More than a century after the Smith family first entered business in Douglas, and more than fifty years after John acquired Crossburn, the story continues.
